About TEDxYouth@Abbotsleigh
The first TEDxYouth@Abbotlseigh event was held in August 2018. This idea was initiated by student leader and event licensee Natasha Huang, who was supported by staff members Joel Ford, Jeanine Kobylinski and Donna Moffatt, along with a group of students on the organising commitee. DARE was the theme that underpinned the day and the ideas that were shared. At Abbotsleigh, being bold is a concept that we strive for every day and the first-ever TEDxYouth@Abbotsleigh event brought the true essence of the word to the stage; from speakers who've dared in their careers, dared to follow a passion or dared to succeed against the odds. The event featured performances from within our school community and was watched by an enthusiastic live audience, as well as being live-streamed to the school community. Students and staff also attended a live Q and A session (during assembly) with a selection of our speakers, hosted by Edwina Bartholomew.
But we couldn't stop at just one event. TEDx has a unique ability to bring people together, to spark conversation, to challenge and to expose us to new perspectives.
This year our theme is CONNECT. In a mid-pandemic world, the ways in which we connect are completely different. From Zoom schooling to silent cheering - we've all found different, but meaningful ways to connect with our friends, families and communities.
We hope TEDxYouth@Abbotsleigh 2021 is another opportunity for you to connect with new ideas and fresh perspectives! Check out the line-up of inspirational speakers and performers who will be sharing their ideas, stories and talents with an even bigger live audience at Abbotsleigh on March 26. And at the new TEDxYouth Hub, there will be an opportunity for you to engage in discussions and to participate in connective games and activities!
About TEDx (x = independently organized event)
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
